Chapter 1: Principles of Life
Chapter 1 Suggested Schedule:NOTE: The videos and other supplemental resources in the right-hand column of this page are to help you understand the topics presented in your textbook (for the summer, I have provided you each with PDF copies of the textbook chapters you are expected to know by the time school starts in late August).
The schedule is to help you identify approximate times you should be completing particular tasks - so you do not have to scramble at the end of the summer - or try to learn this material concurrently with other complex topics after the school year begins. Monday (6/19): Get a 50-page notebook for conducting the Summer AP-BIO Scavenger Hunt Assignment. Get 3X5 Index Cards for creating Vocabulary Flash Cards. Take a look at the class website (blackhawklabs.weebly.com). Explore the Google Drive Shared folders to learn how material can be obtained, collaborated on, and submitted to the instructor.
Wednesday (6/21): Watch the "How you Study Effectively with Flash Cards" video and read through the "8 Better Ways to Make and Study Flash Cards" blog post by College Info Geek. Create your Chapter 1 Vocabulary Flash Cards using the Google Sheet located in the Shared "AP-BIO View" folder in Google Drive.
Friday (6/23): Check out the following videos in the "General Science Skills" section of this website: How to Read a Textbook and Spaced Repetition. Begin completing your AP-BIO Scavenger Hunt Assignment, available in the shared folder "AP-BIO View" in Google Drive. This is due the first day of school. Any portions that have the requirement for a digital submission for review, should be done before the first day of school. Those submissions must be made through Google Drive in your personal folder shared with Mr. Oliver in Google Drive.
Monday (6/26): Watch the video entitled Biology (at the top of the right-hand column of this page). It provides a brief overview of AP-Biology's 4 primary concepts. Read the Chapter 1 Introduction (p. 1) while thinking about the guiding question just below the picture "What principles of life are illustrated in this scene?" Read Concept 1.1 (pp. 2-5). Complete the directed reading questions found in the AP-BIO View Folder for Chapter 1. Create a separate Google Doc with the answers to the questions and submit the doc by saving it in your Assignments folder (I will be checking these with TurnItIn.)
Wednesday (6/28): Watch the "How a single-celled organism almost wiped out life on Earth" video.
Friday (6/30): Watch the video entitled What is Genomics?. Read Concept 1.2 (pp. 6-7). Complete the directed reading questions found in the AP-BIO View Folder for Chapter 1. Create a separate Google Doc with the answers to the questions and submit the doc by saving it in your Assignments folder (I will be checking these with TurnItIn.)
Monday (7/3): Watch the video entitled The Hierarchy of Life. Read Concept 1.3 (pp. 7-8). Complete the directed reading questions found in the AP-BIO View Folder for Chapter 1. Create a separate Google Doc with the answers to the questions and submit the doc by saving it in your Assignments folder (I will be checking these with TurnItIn.)
Wednesday (7/5): Watch the video entitled Common Misconceptions of Evolution. Read Concept 1.4 (pp. 9-10). Complete the directed reading questions found in the AP-BIO View Folder for Chapter 1. Create a separate Google Doc with the answers to the questions and submit the doc by saving it in your Assignments folder (I will be checking these with TurnItIn.)
Friday (7/7): Read Concept 1.5 (pp. 10-14). Pay particular attention to the "INVESTIGATION" boxes on pages 12 & 13. These contain a well laid out description of the scientific process being put into action to study the potential effects of a common herbicide on amphibian populations. I have added a video to the AP-BIO View folder on the shared drive, entitled "Using Scientific Methodology" which provides a thorough description of how the atrazine/amphibian study was conducted. (It is not posted here because the video has restricted use for our class and I am not able to post it openly online.)
Complete the directed reading questions found in the AP-BIO View Folder for Chapter 1. Create a separate Google Doc with the answers to the questions and submit the doc by saving it in your Assignments folder (I will be checking these with TurnItIn.) Monday (7/10): Watch the videos entitled The Times and Troubles of the Scientific Method, The Scientific Method, and The Scientific Method is Crap.
