Create your Eureka Connections Page for Unit 1
The Eureka! Connections pages are located at the beginning of each new unit in your Interactive Science Notebook
- The next two side-by-side pages in your notebook.
- In the center (or close to it) write your big idea or problem statement for the unit. (Hint: look at the heading of this page)
- After each activity in the unit, write a statement on this page spread which conveys the concept learned.
- Share with lab partners and other classmates. Make connections between the content (Conceptually in your mind and Visually on the page with arrows.)
- Use these "lines of evidence" and their connections to write your Eureka! Thesis at the end of the unit.
(All assignments are due the the following class meeting.)
Chapter 1: Matter and Change
|
Chemistry is a Physical ScienceDefines the field of chemistry and distinguished between different branches of chemistry.
Monday (8/29): Get a 70-100 page spiral bound notebook or composition book to use exclusively as a Chemistry notebook.
Wednesday (8/31): Set up Interactive Science Notebook (instructions and supplementary sheets are available on the class Schoology page). Read, sign and return classroom safety contract (available on the class Schoology page, if an extra copy is needed). Read pages 2-5 in class textbook "Modern Chemistry."
Friday (8/31): Left-side work: Answer questions 1-4 on page 5 of the classroom textbook, "Modern Chemistry." From Schoology, download, read, and understand laboratory procedures for Tuesday's lab activity. Bring the printout to class on Tuesday. Read pages 6-14 in class textbook "Modern Chemistry." Watch the video: Lab Techniques & Safety: Crash Course Chemistry #21.
Matter and Its PropertiesDefines matter and contrasts major physical and chemical changes that matter can undergo. Outlines the basic form of a chemical equation and describes how matter is classified.
Wednesday (9/7): Left-side work: Complete the analysis portion of the laboratory exercise. Procedures and data should be attached to the right side of the page spread for today. Be sure to add a statement of what you learned today to the "Eureka! Connections" page for this unit.
Friday (9/9): Left-side work: Complete the "Classification of Matter" flowchart. Attach it in your notebook. Update the "Eureka!" connections page. Read pages 16-20 in "Modern Chemistry." Be sure to add a statement of what you learned today to the "Eureka! Connections" page for this unit.
ElementsIntroduces the Periodic Table as a classification scheme for the elements with descriptions of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
Monday (9/12): Left-side work: Complete the "Elements" Venn Diagram. Attach in your notebook. Update the "Eureka!" Connections page for Unit 1. From Schoology, download, read, and understand laboratory procedures for Wednesday's lab activity. Watch the Crash Course - Chemistry video "The Nucleus.".
Wednesday (9/14): Left-side work: Complete the analysis portion of the "Mixture Separation" Lab we did today. Update the "Eureka!" Connections page for Unit 1. Chapter 1 Test: Beginning today and available through Sunday on Schoology. Take the Chapter 1 Test. be sure to have about a half hour available at one sitting to complete the test.

Chapter 2: Measurements and Calculations
|
Scientific MethodCovers the scientific method and its component activities (e.g., observing, collecting data, formulating and testing hypotheses, and theorizing).
Units of MeasurementPresents SI units of measurement, the concepts of mass and density, and the use of conversion factors.
Monday (9/19): Left-side work: Complete questions 1-6 on page 40 of the textbook. Watch the video: "Unit Conversions & Sig Figs." Read pages 42 - 55 in the textbook Update the "Eureka!" Connections page for Unit 1.
Wednesday (9/21): Left-side work: Complete the Sig Figs worksheet given to you in class (it is also available on our class Schoology page, if you misplace it). Attach the completed worksheet to the left-side of today's page spread in your notebook. Update the Eureka! Connections page for Unit 1.
Using Scientific MeasurementsDescribes accuracy and precision, percentage error, the use of significant figures and scientific notation, and steps for problem solving (e.g., dimensional analysis).
Friday (9/23): Left-side work: Complete the Scientific Notations worksheet given to you in class (it is also available on our class Schoology page, if you misplace it). Attach the completed worksheet to the left-side of today's page spread in your notebook. Update the Eureka! Connections page for Unit 1.
Tuesday (9/27): Left-side work: Create a graph of the spaghetti data collected in class. Attach the completed graph to the left-side of today's page spread in your notebook. Update the Eureka! Connections page for Unit 1.
Wednesday (9/28): Left-side work: Complete the study guide and attach the packet to both the right and left side for today's page spread in your notebook.
